The U.S. military launched significant airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria on December 19, 2025, in retaliation for an attack that killed three Americans, including two Iowa National Guardsmen and a civilian interpreter, on December 13 in Palmyra.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that over 70 ISIS targets were struck using F-15 and A-10 fighter jets, Apache helicopters, and HIMARS rocket artillery, with more than 100 munitions deployed. President Trump described the operation, dubbed 'Operation Hawkeye Strike,' as a declaration of vengeance, emphasizing that the United States will not hesitate to protect its personnel.

The recent attack marked the first U.S. combat fatalities in Syria since 2019 and highlighted the ongoing threats posed by ISIS, with U.S. intelligence estimating between 1,500 and 3,000 militants still active in Syria and Iraq.

The U.S. Central Command stated that prior to the strikes, 10 operations in Iraq and Syria had already resulted in the deaths or capture of 23 ISIS operatives. The strikes were coordinated with Jordanian forces, and Syrian state media reported explosions across central Syria, particularly in rural areas of Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa provinces.

Following the attacks, the Syrian government reiterated its commitment to combatting terrorism, while President Trump promised stronger action against any future threats to American forces. The slain Americans were recognized during a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base shortly before the military response commenced.
