Protests Erupt Over Controversial Development in Belgrade Linked to Jared Kushner

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Belgrade, Serbia, opposing a controversial development project linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump. The protesters are rallying against plans to demolish a site of historical significance, the former Yugoslav army headquarters, to make way for a luxury hotel complex.

This development, backed by Kushner's firm, Affinity Global Development, has ignited tensions amidst a backdrop of broader anti-government protests. Critics argue that the building, which was damaged during NATO bombings in 1999, serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the Kosovo conflict and a symbol of Yugoslav-era architecture.

The Serbian government recently passed legislation aimed at expediting the administrative processes for this project, which many see as unconstitutional. Protesters like Teodora Smiljanic expressed their discontent, claiming that President Aleksandar Vucic is prioritizing foreign relations with the United States over the cultural heritage of Serbia.

Vucic has defended the deal, stating it represents a significant investment of 650 million euros, equating to over 753 million dollars, and will enhance Belgrade's value in the tourism sector.
