A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off Japan's northern coast late Monday, injuring at least 23 people and triggering a tsunami. The quake occurred around 11:15 PM local time, approximately 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori, according to ABC News.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported tsunami surges of up to 70 centimeters in Kuji port and warned of potential aftershocks and an increased risk of a megaquake. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents to seek higher ground as about 800 homes lost electricity and transportation services, including Shinkansen bullet trains, were suspended.

In Hachinohe, where residents reported significant shaking, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed most injuries were due to falling objects. A government task force has been set up to assess damage and ensure public safety, while local officials continue to monitor for aftershocks.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized the importance of preparedness for potential future disasters, recalling the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami. By early Tuesday morning, all tsunami advisories had been lifted, but caution remains as the region may experience additional tremors.
