A Washington resident has been hospitalized with a newly detected strain of bird flu known as H5N5, marking the first known human infection with this virus. According to the Washington State Department of Health, the individual has a mixed backyard flock that was exposed to wild birds, leading to the possible transmission of the virus either from domestic birds or wild ones.

State and federal health officials confirmed that this case represents the first human incidence of bird flu in the United States since February. The infected individual, who has underlying health conditions, remains in the hospital, and public health officials are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the infection.

Richard Webby, a flu researcher at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, indicated that H5N5 does not appear to pose a greater threat to human health compared to the previously known H5N1 virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has echoed this sentiment, stating that there is no evidence suggesting an increased risk to public health as a result of this infection.

They are waiting for further testing on specimens from the patient in Washington. The distinction between H5N5 and H5N1 lies in a protein involved in the virus's ability to spread, which Webby likened to different brands of car tires that serve similar functions but are optimized for different conditions.

Bird flu has been a concern since January 2022, with various strains detected in avian populations across the globe. In March of the previous year, the virus was also found in dairy cows for the first time.

Bird flu can infect not only birds but also mammals, including pigs, cattle, and even pets like cats. Individuals who come into close contact with infected animals, such as farm workers, are considered at higher risk for infection.

The public health response will continue to monitor the situation closely as further data emerges from ongoing investigations.
