On December 13, 2025, a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulted in the deaths of two students, Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama, was known for her leadership as vice president of the Brown College Republicans and described as a devoted Christian and a bright light in her community.

Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman studying biochemistry and neuroscience, immigrated from Uzbekistan and was remembered for his sharp intellect and kind heart. The shooting occurred in a classroom, injuring at least nine others, with one individual in critical condition.

Brown University President Christina Paxson expressed deep sorrow for the victims, highlighting their impact on the university community. As the investigation continues, authorities have released a new photo and video of a person of interest, seeking public assistance in identifying him.

This person, dressed in dark clothing, was observed in the vicinity shortly before the shooting. Police have received around 200 tips but have yet to determine a motive for the attack, prompting concerns about campus safety.

The university has since faced scrutiny regarding its security measures, including the functionality of its emergency alert systems. A memorial for Cook and Umurzokov has been established on campus as the community mourns their tragic loss.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification of the suspect.
