Ukraine's War: Robot Rescues Soldier from Russian Occupied Territory
Full Transcript
Ukrainian forces executed a remarkable rescue operation recently, using an innovative ground robot to retrieve a wounded soldier trapped for 33 days in Russian-occupied territory. According to CBS News, the 1st Medical Battalion of the Ukrainian Ground Forces successfully utilized a casket-shaped robot designed for troop extraction, known as the MAUL ground drone.
After six unsuccessful attempts at rescue, the battalion managed to navigate a treacherous route, which included dodging landmines and drone attacks, to reach the soldier's location. The rescue mission covered about 40 miles, with the drone persevering despite suffering damage from an anti-personnel mine.
The operation took just under six hours and was highlighted by a video shared on social media by the battalion. Volodymyr Koval, head of communications for the battalion, explained that the soldier's location was known, and contact with him was maintained throughout the ordeal, with food being supplied via aerial drones.
The MAUL robot, described as an armored casket mounted on an ATV frame, played a crucial role in this high-stakes extraction. Upon reaching the soldier, he climbed into the capsule, which provided protection as the drone came under attack from a Russian drone on its return journey.
Fortunately, the soldier survived due to the robot's armored design. The operation underscores the challenges faced by soldiers in the ongoing conflict as well as the evolving nature of modern warfare.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the mission, stating that it highlights the importance of such lifesaving efforts and battlefield innovations. He emphasized the need for more technological advancements in the military, including ground robotic systems and drones.
The MAUL robot, initially developed by the battalion, is now produced by a Ukrainian defense company, DevDroid, which sells the units for about $19,000 each. Koval noted that this successful evacuation is part of a broader strategy to implement unmanned evacuations directly from the battlefield, especially given the increasing density of fire that complicates traditional rescue missions.
This incident not only showcases a significant technological achievement but also serves as a morale booster, reinforcing the message that soldiers will be fought for and that rescue efforts will continue despite the dangers present on the battlefield.
