Trump Administration Faces Backlash Over Immigration Crackdown in New Orleans
Full Transcript
The Department of Homeland Security is changing its tactics in immigration enforcement operations, moving away from sweeping raids and focusing instead on specific targets, particularly immigrants in the country illegally who have been convicted of serious crimes.
According to NewsNation's Ali Bradley, U.S. Border Patrol teams under Commander Gregory Bovino will also concentrate on traffic stop enforcement, and larger raids, like those seen at locations such as Home Depot, are likely to be less frequent.
This shift comes amid negative polling for President Trump regarding his immigration policies, with approval ratings dropping from 42 percent to 33 percent in a recent Public Religion Research Institute survey.
Additionally, a YouGov poll found that a majority of Americans disapproved of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations associated with the administration's mass deportation efforts. Despite the change in tactics, operations like Catahoula Crunch in New Orleans will continue, where more than 250 arrests have already been made, with a goal of 5,000 arrests according to DHS.
These enforcement actions have sparked protests and raised concerns about their impact on local communities, as many immigrants report feeling less safe with Trump back in the White House. The report states these immigration enforcement operations have been visible across several states, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
