The Pentagon faced significant challenges regarding the handling of survivors from its boat strike campaign targeting suspected drug traffickers. According to the New York Times, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon officials considered sending survivors to a notorious prison in El Salvador but ultimately opted for repatriation to their home countries, Colombia and Ecuador, to avoid U.S. judicial scrutiny.
Furthermore, Hegseth reportedly declined to show Congress unedited video footage of military strikes during a classified briefing, raising questions about the legality of the operations, which have resulted in at least 87 deaths since early September.
Congressional leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency and accountability surrounding these military decisions.
