Full Transcript
The FBI arrested Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old man from Woodbridge, Virginia, in connection with the 2021 pipe bomb case involving the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters. Cole is accused of placing two viable pipe bombs outside these locations on January 5, 2021, just before the Capitol riot.
According to CBS News, the devices, made from 1x8-inch pipes and kitchen timers, did not detonate but could have caused serious harm. Authorities used evidence such as cellphone records, credit card purchases of bomb-making materials, and license plate data to identify and arrest Cole.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the arrest was the result of a renewed investigation without any new tips or witnesses. The FBI had previously struggled to identify the suspect, despite offering a $500,000 reward for information.
The arrest comes after nearly five years of investigation into a case that has fueled conspiracy theories surrounding the events of January 6, 2021. Following the arrest, DNC Chair Ken Martin emphasized the importance of bringing those responsible for political violence to justice.
Cole has no prior criminal record and lived with family members in Virginia, where he worked in a bail bondsman's office. His motive for the alleged bombing remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
