Full Transcript
A mass shooting at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration has left 15 people dead, including a 10-year-old girl and a Holocaust survivor. The two gunmen, identified as Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid Akram, 50, opened fire on attendees at the event, which was organized by Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who was among the victims.
Naveed Akram has been charged with 59 offenses, including 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act, with authorities indicating that the attack may have been inspired by Islamic State.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced criticism for not doing enough to address rising antisemitism and for the gun laws that allowed Sajid Akram to acquire six firearms legally. Mourners gathered for Rabbi Schlanger's funeral, expressing anger and grief over the attack, which has been deemed Australia's deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years.
Vigils and community support have emerged as Australians unite against the tragedy, with calls for improved protections for Jewish communities amid increasing scrutiny of government actions regarding hate crimes and gun control.
