Tesla Enhances Employee Commuting with Giga Train Service at Berlin
Full Transcript
Tesla is set to enhance its Giga Train service for employees at its Berlin Gigafactory, with the updated service beginning on January 4. According to Teslarati, the expanded factory shuttle service will now include direct rail trips from Berlin Ostbahnhof to the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg facility in Grunheide.
This initiative aims to increase the number of employees commuting by rail while maintaining a free shuttle service for all riders. The new route will operate six direct trips daily, aligning with the shift changes for employees.
The trains will run between Berlin Ostbahnhof, stopping at Ostkreuz, and Erkner Station, which is conveniently located at the Gigafactory. Despite ongoing construction at nearby Fangschleuse and Kopenick stations, Tesla has optimized the route to ensure a consistent travel time of approximately 35 minutes.
This enhancement follows earlier phases of the Giga Train program, which initially connected Erkner to the factory grounds and subsequently expanded to Berlin-Lichtenberg. Tesla began production at its Grunheide facility in March 2022, and since then, the workforce has grown to around 11,500 employees, with an estimated 60% of them commuting from Berlin.
The Gigafactory is responsible for producing the Model Y, Tesla's best-selling vehicle, for both the German market and other regions. Notably, Tesla has expressed a commitment to sustainability by encouraging more than half of its staff to utilize public transportation instead of private cars.
The shuttle serves as a pivotal component of this initiative. Importantly, Tesla has also decided to keep the shuttle service open to non-employees, allowing free access to the broader community and enhancing local mobility options, as reported by Teslarati.
