An ongoing phishing campaign is targeting advertising accounts on Google Workspace and Facebook by impersonating prominent brands such as Unilever, Disney, MasterCard, LVMH, and Uber, according to a report from Push Security.

This campaign employs fake Calendly invitations that lure victims into revealing their credentials. These phishing emails are crafted using AI tools and have successfully impersonated over seventy-five brands.

Once a target clicks on the link, they are directed to a fake Calendly landing page that presents a CAPTCHA, followed by an advanced phishing page designed to steal Google Workspace login sessions. Push Security confirmed that the campaign specifically targets Google MCC ad manager accounts.

The phishing pages utilize anti-analysis mechanisms, including blocking VPN and proxy traffic, and preventing users from opening developer tools, making detection more difficult. Additionally, a variant of the campaign also targets Facebook Business credentials through similar tactics.

Threat actors leverage compromised marketing accounts to launch malvertising campaigns and can resell these accounts to other cybercriminals for profit. Advertisers must be particularly vigilant, as these compromised accounts can facilitate highly targeted attacks due to the capabilities of ad platforms in geo-targeting and device-specific targeting.

The report highlights the dangers of AiTM phishing techniques, which can bypass two-factor authentication protections. Push Security also observed another malvertising campaign affecting Google Ads Manager accounts, wherein users searching for 'Google Ads' encounter malicious sponsored ads that redirect them to phishing pages.

Security experts recommend that account owners utilize hardware security keys and verify URLs before entering credentials to mitigate the risks associated with these sophisticated phishing techniques. The implications for Meta's advertising strategies are significant, as emerging AI technologies present both opportunities for enhanced targeting and risks, particularly in light of increasing cyber threats.

Understanding these dynamics will be crucial for Meta as it adapts to the evolving landscape of digital advertising, especially on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
