Apple has announced an expansion of its environmental initiatives in Australia and New Zealand, focusing on sustainability and carbon reduction efforts. According to 9to5Mac, the tech giant is extending its Restore Fund initiative to New Zealand, investing in the protection and restoration of 8,600 hectares of forestland.
This project covers four sites in the Central North Island and one in the South Island and aims to enhance biodiversity, increase carbon sequestration, and generate financial returns through sustainable management practices.
The initiative will follow Forest Stewardship Council standards and includes conservation efforts on 3,000 hectares of native forestland. The Restore Fund, which was launched in twenty twenty-one, is designed to scale investment in high-quality, nature-based carbon removal projects globally.
Additionally, Apple has provided updates on a related project in Queensland, Australia, where 1,700 hectares of degraded sugarcane farmland is being transformed into a macadamia orchard, planting over 800,000 trees.
This restoration effort is located south of Bundaberg and aims to improve soil quality, boost biodiversity, and enhance water efficiency while sequestering carbon. The initiative also includes a partnership with Indigenous conservation organization W.Y.L.D., which focuses on reconnecting youth with the landscape through a 100-hectare restoration area that will serve as a biodiversity corridor linking two national parks.
Furthermore, Apple is expanding its renewable energy initiatives in Australia with a new solar project currently under construction in Lancaster, Victoria. This project will add to Apple's renewable energy portfolio in the region, which is projected to generate over one million megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually before twenty thirty.
These announcements follow recent investments made by Apple in Europe and China, indicating the company's commitment to meeting its Apple 2030 goals through international initiatives, even as it has shifted focus away from domestic projects this year.
