OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser, launched in October, has faced scrutiny from security researchers who demonstrated vulnerabilities, such as altering the browser's behavior through simple text inputs in applications like Google Docs.

The U.K.'s National Cyber Security Centre also pointed out that prompt injection attacks against generative AI applications may not be completely mitigated, suggesting that cybersecurity professionals focus on reducing risks instead.

To combat these issues, OpenAI is employing a rapid-response cycle for security enhancements, utilizing an LLM-based automated attacker to simulate and test potential security breaches. This bot aims to identify weaknesses in AI systems more rapidly than human testers.

OpenAI is also promoting user practices that limit the risk of prompt injections, such as requiring user confirmations for actions taken by the AI and advising users to give specific instructions rather than broad access.

However, some experts express skepticism regarding the current value of agentic browsers, citing high risks associated with their access to sensitive data. Rami McCarthy, a principal security researcher, cautioned that while reinforcement learning can help adapt to attacker behavior, the trade-offs related to autonomy and access in AI browsers remain significant.
