Gaming Industry Developments: Unions and New Releases
Full Transcript
Id Software, the studio behind Doom, has announced it has formed a 'wall-to-wall' union, with a majority of employees voting in favor. This union includes every employee, regardless of their duties, and will work alongside the Communications Workers of America.
Microsoft, which owns ZeniMax, has recognized this union effort, having previously agreed to a labor neutrality agreement with the CWA and ZeniMax workers. The union aims to protect remote work policies and address worker protections related to AI usage.
Meanwhile, at The Game Awards, new Tomb Raider titles were announced: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original game, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a brand-new entry. Alix Wilton Regan will voice Lara Croft, succeeding Camilla Luddington.
Legacy of Atlantis is slated for release in 2026, with Catalyst following in 2027, both utilizing Unreal Engine 5. The industry faces notable changes with the unionization efforts at id Software and the exciting new directions for the Tomb Raider franchise.
