UK and Germany Invest $18.7M to Boost Quantum Research Collaboration

The UK and Germany have announced a collaborative investment package totaling 14 million pounds, equivalent to 18.7 million USD, aimed at enhancing quantum research. This investment was revealed during the final day of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's State Visit to the UK.
The funding includes 6 million pounds directed towards a joint research and development funding call set to launch in early 2026, with Innovate UK and VDI Germany each contributing 3 million pounds. Additionally, 8 million pounds will be invested by the UK government in the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics in Glasgow, which aims to promote the UK's quantum industrial base.
A Memorandum of Understanding was also formalized between the UK's National Physical Laboratory and Germany's Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt to advance shared quantum standards. UK Science Minister Lord Vallance emphasized that international collaboration is vital for unlocking the potential of quantum technologies, contributing to stronger economies and more secure societies for both nations.
