Starlink Expands Internet Access in Disaster Relief Efforts

Starlink is providing free internet service to affected communities across Indonesia following severe flooding on Sumatra that has resulted in over 170 fatalities. The flooding, caused by a tropical cyclone, has significantly disrupted communications and disaster relief efforts in regions such as West Sumatra.

According to Starlink's official support website and a post shared on X, the company will extend free service to both new and existing customers through the end of December 2023. For existing customers, Starlink is proactively applying free service credits to their accounts without requiring any action.

This initiative also includes those who have previously suspended or paused their accounts, allowing them to reactivate their service during this critical period. New customers in the impacted areas can receive free service upon activation by submitting support tickets indicating their need for Indonesia Flood Support.

This latest effort is part of Starlink's ongoing commitment to disaster response, which has included previous initiatives such as delivering over 10,000 Starlink kits to communities in October 2024 following Hurricane Helene and providing connectivity to regions in Cape Verde after a destructive storm in August 2023.

Additionally, Starlink has extended free service to Canadians affected by wildfires, as well as to communities in Jamaica and the Bahamas following Hurricane Melissa just weeks ago. With ongoing flooding disrupting essential services in Indonesia, Starlink's rapid deployment of satellite terminals and free service will be crucial for residents to remain connected, coordinate aid, and initiate recovery efforts.

This proactive approach underscores Starlink’s evolving role as a critical communication lifeline during emergencies around the globe, enhancing connectivity when traditional infrastructure fails.
