Rogers Launches Starlink Satellite Mobile Service in Canada
Full Transcript
Rogers Communications has officially launched its new Starlink-powered satellite-to-mobile service in Canada, providing data, voice, video, and messaging capabilities in areas lacking traditional network access.
This commercial debut follows a beta test earlier this year, which began in July, enabling Starlink text messaging, including text-to-911. Tony Staffieri, President and CEO of Rogers, stated that they are proud to be the first and only provider in Canada to offer this technology, enhancing connectivity for Canadians.
The Rogers Satellite service supports several key applications over Starlink's Direct to Cell network, including WhatsApp for voice and video calls, Google Maps, AccuWeather, X, and CalTopo, with plans to expand the list as developers adapt their apps for satellite connectivity.
The service is available at no extra cost to Rogers customers on select plans during promotional periods, while other Canadians can subscribe for fifteen Canadian dollars per month. Beta trial participants are eligible for a five Canadian dollar discount for their first twelve months.
Rogers aims to expand this service to provide full data and voice coverage, including 911 calling, for all Canadians. This launch is a significant step in Starlink's global strategy to integrate satellite phone connectivity into mainstream mobile networks, following similar initiatives by T-Mobile in the U.S. and Entel in Chile.
SpaceX plans to test its own Direct to Cell service on its spectrum by 2026 and has recently filed trademarks for Starlink Mobile, indicating intentions for a standalone satellite-powered cellular brand.
For now, Rogers is leading the way in bringing Starlink's Direct to Cell capabilities to consumers in Canada, particularly benefiting those in remote regions.
