This trend is not limited to Sunday Robotics, as other companies have also focused on developing robots capable of performing specific household tasks, such as folding clothes. Reports from IEEE Spectrum highlight that companies like Weave Robotics and Physical Intelligence are pushing the boundaries of robotic manipulation, particularly in tasks that many people find tedious, with clothes folding becoming a popular demonstration.
Historically, the challenges of robotic manipulation have included brittle and slow demonstrations; however, advancements in machine learning, particularly imitation learning, have made significant strides in recent years.
This shift allows robots to learn from human demonstrations, making them more adaptable and capable of handling various tasks. Meanwhile, Toyota has unveiled a mobility robot called Walk Me, designed to assist individuals in navigating environments where traditional wheelchairs struggle, such as stairs.
The Walk Me robot features four mechanical legs that mimic the movements of mountain goats, allowing it to climb and traverse uneven terrain while providing a stable seat for users.
