Unlike previous game-playing agents like AlphaZero and AlphaStar, which were designed with specific competitive goals in mind, SIMA 2 is trained to engage in open-ended gameplay without predefined objectives.

Users can interact with SIMA 2 through text chat, spoken commands, or even by drawing directly on the game screen. The agent processes video game frames in real time to determine necessary actions for task completion.

SIMA 2 was trained using footage of human players engaging with eight commercial video games, including titles like No Man's Sky and Goat Simulator 3, as well as three proprietary virtual worlds created by DeepMind.

By connecting SIMA 2 to the Gemini platform, researchers report that the agent significantly improves its ability to follow instructions, ask clarifying questions, and provide progress updates. In experimental tests, SIMA 2 was placed in unfamiliar environments generated by Genie 3, the latest iteration of DeepMind's world model, and successfully navigated these new spaces while following instructions.

This research marks a significant step forward in the application of AI in gaming, with potential implications for the future of robotics beyond the gaming industry.
