Google Introduces Pixel-to-iPhone File Sharing with AirDrop Compatibility

Google announced that its Quick Share feature on Android is now compatible with Apple's AirDrop, enabling file transfers between Pixel 10 devices and iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This development allows direct, peer-to-peer file sharing without routing data through a server, ensuring that no content is logged or additional data is shared.

Users can select Apple devices within the Quick Share interface when the AirDrop 'Everyone for 10 minutes' mode is active, facilitating the transfer of photos, videos, and other files. Notably, this interoperability was achieved without direct collaboration with Apple, as Google leveraged its own implementation to enhance cross-platform communication.

The introduction of this feature represents Google's ongoing efforts to make interactions between different operating systems more seamless and user-friendly. To use this capability, Pixel 10 owners need to update their Quick Share extension through the settings menu and reboot their device.

Google has emphasized that security is a top priority for this feature, employing a multi-layered security approach to protect users during file sharing. The secure sharing channel is developed using Rust, a memory-safe programming language, which mitigates risks associated with common vulnerabilities like buffer overflow attacks.

Both Android and iOS provide robust built-in security, and Google's commitment to safety includes internal threat modeling, privacy reviews, and third-party penetration testing by NetSPI, which confirmed the security of the interoperability feature.

This Quick Share-AirDrop functionality is initially available on the Pixel 10 series, with plans to expand to more Android devices in the future.
