Foldable Phones: iPhone and Galaxy to Follow Pixel's Lead
Full Transcript
After Google pivoted away from its stout book-like foldable form factor found in the original Pixel Fold, Apple's upcoming iPhone Fold and a future Samsung foldable may adopt a similar design. The original Pixel Fold, launched in 2023, featured a small and wide outer display that opened to a wider internal canvas, contrasting with Samsung's narrow outer display design.
According to ETNews, Apple's iPhone Fold will use a 4:3 aspect ratio for its inner display, similar to the iPad, while Samsung is reportedly developing a wide foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display.
In comparison, the original Pixel Fold had a 5.8-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Google's initial design had a 6:5 aspect ratio, slightly taller than 4:3, which suggests that Apple's and Samsung's new foldables may resemble the original Pixel Fold when opened and closed.
Apple's device is still in development with a focus on a crease-free design. The report highlights that the shift back to the original Pixel Fold's design may be due to the need for better app support, as many Android apps have not been optimized for wider displays.
Apple's strategy aligns with its extensive app library, which could unlock potential for its foldable device, as developers typically adapt quickly to Apple's innovations. This trend indicates a significant shift in the market towards innovative form factors in foldable smartphones.
