A Bronx man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl he met on social media. According to amNewYork, William Credle, 24, was taken into custody by the Bronx Adult Sex Crimes Squad after the incident on November 3.
Police reports indicate that Credle ordered a car service to bring the minor to his apartment, where he allegedly raped her despite her protests. The criminal complaint details that the girl was physically prevented from leaving and that her tablet, her main communication device, was hidden by Credle.
The victim's parents tracked her location through the tablet and contacted authorities, leading to Credle's arrest on November 4. Credle is facing multiple serious charges, including rape, unlawful imprisonment, and sexual abuse, and is scheduled to appear in court on November 10.
His defense attorney has not responded to requests for comment. Notably, this is not Credle's first offense. He has a history of sexual offenses against minors, including a previous arrest for a similar crime in August 2023, where he allegedly lured another teenage girl via Snapchat.
In total, he has approximately ten prior arrests for various offenses, including assault and grand larceny. Authorities have called for anyone with further information or potential victims to come forward and contact the NYPD.
Victims are encouraged to reach out to the NYPD Sex Crimes Hotline or the Crime Stoppers hotline for assistance. This troubling incident highlights the risks associated with social media interactions, particularly for young users.
It underscores the critical need for better regulation and education regarding digital platforms to help ensure user safety and prevent exploitation. As dangerous trends emerge on social media, such as AI-generated pranks, questions arise about the responsibilities of these platforms in protecting their users.
The report emphasizes that social media companies must take proactive measures to address these concerns in order to promote a safer online environment.
