A man named Ivan Matias-Montes, 45, was sentenced to 40 years in state prison after pleading guilty to 85 counts, including lewd acts on a child and contacting a minor with the intent to commit a sexual offense.

According to prosecutors, Matias-Montes used social media platforms to connect with and sexually abuse multiple underage girls, including at least three known victims. One victim, a now 20-year-old woman known as Jane Doe, recounted that she was first contacted by Matias-Montes over Instagram when she was just 14 years old, believing he was in his twenties.

During their interactions, Matias-Montes manipulated her into a romantic relationship, leading to sexual encounters and requests for explicit pictures. This victim reported him to police shortly before her 18th birthday.

Deputy District Attorney Carder Chan highlighted that Matias-Montes had solicited countless teenage girls over nearly a decade using similar tactics. Judge John Pro referred to the case as one of the most horrific instances of sexual abuse and trauma witnessed in the court, emphasizing to the victims that they did nothing wrong.

The case underscores the pressing legal and ethical challenges related to the use of social media in criminal activities and the necessity for stricter online safety regulations.
