Elgin Mayor David Kaptain criticized federal immigration agents for their use of tear gas, pepper spray, and flash-bang grenades against protesters outside an apartment complex on Maple Lane in Elgin, Illinois.

Kaptain expressed his feelings of disgust in a video posted to city social media accounts, stating, 'This city was founded on its diversity and self-respect and the mutual respect between our residents.' The protest began around 10 a.m. as federal agents pursued a man into the complex, with agents seen escorting the man out around 3 p.m.

Kaptain called for community unity in the wake of the events, emphasizing the need for mutual respect as the city works through this situation. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson was not available for comment the following day.
