Australia's Social Media Regulations Target Reddit and Discord for Teen Safety

Australia is tightening its grip on social media to protect minors, with new regulations targeting platforms like Reddit and Discord. According to Engadget, Australia's Communications Minister Anika Wells announced that Reddit will be included in an under-16 social media ban set to take effect on December 10.

Alongside Reddit, platforms such as Facebook, X, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram are also part of this initiative. The legislation, passed in late 2024, holds social media companies accountable for preventing underage access, with penalties of up to AU$49.5 million for non-compliance.

Wells emphasized the need to shield children from harmful content and manipulative algorithms, stating that platforms must utilize their technology to safeguard young users. This move reflects a broader global concern regarding child safety online, as more governments scrutinize the impact of social media on youth.

Meanwhile, Discord is proactively enhancing parental controls through its Family Center. This update allows parents to monitor their teens' activities without infringing on their privacy. Parents can now track purchases, time spent in calls, and the top contacts their teens interact with.

Moreover, teens can notify guardians when they report content, fostering communication about online safety. However, it’s important to note that Australian officials have clarified that Discord will not be treated as an age-restricted platform under this new legislation.

This distinction indicates that while Discord is enhancing its oversight capabilities, it won't face the same restrictions as Reddit and other major social media sites. Earlier this year, Discord faced legal challenges in New Jersey for allegedly misleading parents about its safety features, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of its practices regarding child safety.
