Trump Launches AI Initiative 'Genesis Mission' to Boost Research

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday launching the 'Genesis Mission,' a new initiative aimed at accelerating scientific discovery through the use of artificial intelligence. According to CBS News, the order directs the Energy Department and its national labs to create an integrated AI platform utilizing their existing and future supercomputers. The initiative is positioned as a significant federal effort, with Michael Kratsios, the president's science adviser, stating it represents the largest mobilization of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program. Within 90 days, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright is tasked with identifying systems and datasets available to support the program, including resources from industry partners. This initiative seeks to address barriers to data-sharing, enabling researchers to utilize the federal government's vast but often decentralized datasets to train AI systems. With additional computing resources and enhanced access to data, the initiative aims to tackle practical scientific challenges within 270 days, focusing on areas such as advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and nuclear fission and fusion.
