Elise Stefanik Suspends New York Governor Campaign
Full Transcript
Republican Representative Elise Stefanik announced on Friday that she is suspending her campaign for governor of New York and will not seek reelection to Congress. In her statement, she expressed that it would not be an effective use of resources to engage in a protracted primary battle, particularly in a challenging state like New York.
Stefanik highlighted family considerations, stating, 'While many know me as Congresswoman, my most important title is Mom,' and emphasized her desire to focus on her young son's future. The decision comes after Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman entered the gubernatorial race, complicating her path to the nomination.
Stefanik had initially garnered significant support, including endorsements from 34 Assembly members and 12 state senators. Following her announcement, Republican state chair Ed Cox endorsed Blakeman, indicating a shift in party support.
Trump also expressed his support for Stefanik, calling her a 'fantastic person' and a 'tremendous talent.' Stefanik has served New York's 21st Congressional District since 2014 and was previously a frontrunner for the Republican nomination for governor before the race dynamics changed.
