Full Transcript
A shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday left two people dead and nine others injured. The incident occurred around 4 PM in a first-floor classroom of the Barus and Holley building during final exams.
Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy OHara described the suspect as a male dressed in black, who was last seen leaving the building on Hope Street. The university's president, Christina Paxson, confirmed that all ten shooting victims were students.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for students and nearby residents as authorities conducted a manhunt for the shooter. Eyewitnesses reported hiding under desks and locking themselves in during the attack.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley remarked that it was a deeply tragic day for the community, noting that exams were ongoing at the time, which contributed to the unlocked building doors. As of late Saturday, reports indicated that seven of the injured remained in critical condition, while others were stabilized.
Local law enforcement, along with federal agencies including the FBI and ATF, are involved in the ongoing investigation. Despite initial reports of a suspect being in custody, authorities later clarified that the manhunt was still active.
The shooting has reignited discussions on campus safety and gun control in America, as calls for support and prayers for the victims poured in from around the nation, including remarks from President Donald Trump and local officials.
