Amazon Employees Demand Action on AI Safety Concerns

Over one thousand Amazon employees have signed an open letter addressed to CEO Andy Jassy and the senior leadership team, raising significant concerns about the company's aggressive AI rollout. This letter, hosted by Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, reflects worries from a diverse group of workers, including Whole Foods cashiers and IT support technicians, about the repercussions of AI on democracy, jobs, and the environment.

The letter claims that Amazon is prioritizing AI development over its climate goals, noting an increase in the company's global carbon emissions since 2019, despite its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

The signees emphasize that the rapid pace of AI development could lead to severe damage to society, stating, 'We believe that the all-costs-justified, warp-speed approach to AI development will do staggering damage to democracy, to our jobs, and to the Earth.' In light of Amazon's announcement in October regarding the potential layoff of 14,000 corporate employees, with total cuts possibly reaching 30,000, the letter highlights increasing pressure on remaining staff.

Employees report feeling forced to produce more in less time and are being tasked with the development of AI tools for projects that may not require such technology. Additionally, concerns are raised about the use of Amazon's Ring doorbell cameras, particularly regarding the potential for police to request footage, which could strengthen surveillance capabilities and empower an authoritarian government.

The letter demands that Amazon provide a public plan to power all data centers with renewable energy, permit employees to review the use of AI, and ensure that the AI is not utilized for violence, surveillance, or mass deportation.

Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser responded to the letter, asserting that claims of the company abandoning its climate commitments are 'categorically false' and emphasizing their investments in sustainable energy and carbon-free initiatives.

The response highlights Amazon's ongoing efforts to power its operations sustainably and support advanced nuclear energy agreements.
