The New York Rangers suffered another disappointing loss at Madison Square Garden, falling 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, November 18th. This defeat marked the Rangers' home record at a troubling 2-8-1, raising concerns about their performance on home ice this season.
Despite having the NHL's best road record with 11 wins, the Rangers' struggles at home are perplexing, especially considering their dominance at MSG just two seasons ago, where they finished with a league-best 114 points.
Coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged the team's subpar performance, stating, 'We didn't have our best. I'm stating the obvious.' The Rangers came into the game on a three-game winning streak, including impressive road victories over the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins, but reverted to their troubling home form against a Lightning team that extended its winning streak to seven games.
In their eight home losses, the Rangers have scored just three goals in regulation, highlighting a significant offensive struggle. The team began the season with a 3-0 shutout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins and faced another shutout against the Washington Capitals, as well as a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild.
Captain J.T. Miller, who rejoined the Rangers in a trade from Vancouver and was named captain this season, expressed frustration after the game, saying, 'At no point in that game were we deserving of winning.' He scored the Rangers' lone goal against Tampa but highlighted the lack of urgency and effort from the team, calling it 'unacceptable.' Assistant captain Vincent Trocheck emphasized the mental aspect of the game, stating, 'This game is majority mental.
It's up to you to fight off the negativity.' The Rangers will practice on Monday before facing the Dallas Stars at home on Tuesday, followed by challenging matchups against the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights next weekend.
The team also faced concerns over top defenseman Adam Fox, who was evaluated after taking a hard hit during the game. Fox assisted on Miller's goal and is tied for the team lead in points with 26, making his health a crucial factor for the team's performance moving forward.
