NHL Investigates Consolidation of Jets Franchise Records
Full Transcript
The NHL is investigating the possibility of consolidating franchise records for the Winnipeg Jets with those of the original Jets, as mentioned by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly during a media availability in Winnipeg.
Jets owner Mark Chipman has inquired about this consolidation. Bettman indicated that the NHL is considering the complexities involved, stating, 'It's not as simple as just doing it. It's not so much a process, it's what the end result would look like and can we make it make sense?' The original Jets franchise records are currently unassigned, following the unique circumstances surrounding the former Coyotes franchise, which was deactivated in 2024.
The Coyotes' records only track from 2024-25 onwards due to the NHL's expansion process that allowed the Utah Mammoth to form. The implications of this consolidation could affect current Jets records, as players like Mark Scheifele would need to surpass the historical records set by Dale Hawerchuk, who scored 379 goals and accumulated 929 points with the original Jets.
The original Jets were active in Winnipeg from 1979 to 1996 before relocating to Arizona, where they existed until 2024, while the current Jets franchise, originally the Atlanta Thrashers, relocated to Winnipeg in 2011.
