Full Transcript
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bobby McMann has been suspended for one game for high-sticking Tampa Bay Lightning winger Oliver Bjorkstrand, as announced by the NHL on Tuesday. This incident occurred three minutes into the third period during Toronto's 2-0 victory over Tampa Bay.
McMann received a match penalty after swinging his stick and striking Bjorkstrand's head following a cross-check from the Lightning forward. According to a Department of Player Safety video, McMann was found to be in full control of his stick and body during the play, emphasizing the need for greater control to avoid dangerous contact.
This is the first suspension of McMann's career, and he will forfeit U.S. $7,031.25 to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. He will miss the Maple Leafs' upcoming game against the San Jose Sharks and will be eligible to return for a matchup against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
McMann has recorded eight goals and six assists in 29 games this season, with a career total of 73 points in 169 games with the Maple Leafs. Leafs coach Craig Berube expressed disagreement with the match penalty, indicating it was a tough call from his perspective on the bench.
