Titans Offensive Line Shows Improvement Amidst Season Challenges
Full Transcript
The Tennessee Titans offensive line has shown marked improvement in recent weeks, addressing earlier concerns. General manager Mike Borgonzi signed Dan Moore Jr. to a lucrative contract to play left tackle, while veteran Kevin Zeitler joined the offensive line via free agency, and Lloyd Cushenberry was on a $50 million contract.
First-round picks Peter Skoronski and JC Latham rounded out the unit, yet the offensive line struggled early in the season. However, a switch has completely flipped in recent outings. In the Week 14 victory over the Cleveland Browns, the Titans offensive line was outstanding, allowing quarterback Cam Ward to throw two touchdowns and be sacked just once during the game.
Running back Tony Pollard rushed for a career-high 161 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.4 yards per carry on 25 attempts. The offensive line built on this momentum in Week 15 despite a loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Ward enjoyed his second consecutive multi-touchdown passing game, and the pocket was clean on his 34-yard score to Gunnar Helm, as he was not sacked at all. Pollard continued to excel with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 14 attempts, averaging 7.4 yards per carry.
Tyjae Spears also contributed with an impressive 11.3 yards per carry, rushing for 34 yards on three carries. Despite trailing by multiple points, limiting their run game, the offensive line held firm.
Some speculated that Cushenberry's injury may have improved the unit's performance, but after his return, the line did not miss a beat in both pass protection and run blocking. The offense has become significantly better since parting ways with Brian and Bill Callahan.
Looking forward, Moore, Skoronski, and Latham are confirmed to return next season, while Zeitler is a pending free agent. Cushenberry's potential as a cap casualty remains uncertain, yet his chances to stay improve if the offensive line continues its consistent performance in the final three weeks of the season.
