Olu Oluwatimi's Second Chance with Seahawks
Full Transcript
Olu Oluwatimi's journey with the Seattle Seahawks has taken a significant turn as he steps into the starting center role following an injury to Jalen Sundell. According to the Seattle Times, Oluwatimi's chance to compete for the position was hindered early in training camp due to a back issue that sidelined him for weeks.
This absence included missing critical preseason games against the Raiders and Chiefs, during which Sundell excelled, solidifying his position in the starting lineup. By the time Oluwatimi returned to practice in late August, the Seahawks had already established their offensive line, leaving Oluwatimi with limited opportunities to showcase his capabilities.
Through the first eight games of the 2025 season, he had only seen 30 snaps, primarily in blowout situations. However, that changed dramatically during a recent game against Arizona when Sundell suffered a knee injury, prompting Oluwatimi to step in.
Coach Mike Macdonald confirmed that Sundell will miss several games and may even go on injured reserve, which opens the door for Oluwatimi to claim the starting position he wanted to compete for initially.
Despite the circumstances, Oluwatimi expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, 'I love playing football and I love competing, so any chance I get to do that, I’m always grateful and excited.' His return to action was a mixed bag; he had a false start on his first snap and mishandled a snap that resulted in a fumble.
However, he settled in and contributed positively to the team's performance, including a significant drive that led to a field goal. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak praised Oluwatimi for his training camp performance before his injury, emphasizing the need for him to get back up to speed with more reps.
The Seahawks currently have rookie Bryce Cabeldue and second-year lineman Christian Haynes available, but until Sundell returns, Oluwatimi will be the starting center. Drafted 154th overall in 2023, Oluwatimi has already shown his potential, starting the final eight games of the previous season and helping the Seahawks achieve a six and two record in those starts.
With the Seahawks' offense ranking third in the NFL in points scored, Oluwatimi's effective play will be critical as the season progresses. Sources indicate that the team hopes Oluwatimi can maintain the position until Sundell's return, potentially creating a competitive situation for the starting center spot upon Sundell's return.
The Seahawks are also dealing with other injuries, including rookie receiver Tory Horton and cornerback Josh Jobe, who is on the road to recovery from a concussion. The upcoming games will test Oluwatimi's ability to step up and solidify his place on the team.
