Kyle Shanahan Discusses Defensive Adjustments Without Fred Warner

Kyle Shanahan discussed the challenges the San Francisco 49ers defense is facing in the absence of star linebacker Fred Warner, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury. Since his injury, the team has struggled significantly, particularly in terms of defensive performance.

Rookie third-round pick Nick Martin has yet to see any defensive snaps this season, despite fans calling for his inclusion. Shanahan indicated that while there have been discussions about Martin potentially learning the strongside linebacker role, he does not believe it's the best move for the team or for Martin's development at this time.

Instead, the team has relied on Luke Gifford, who weighs approximately 25 pounds more than Martin. Gifford's performance, however, has raised concerns, as the defense has underperformed when he is on the field.

In games where Gifford has played over 20 snaps, such as against the Rams, Texans, and Buccaneers, the 49ers have struggled significantly. According to the report, the team has posted a negative eight in expected points added per 60 plays against the run while Gifford is on the field.

Shanahan's comments suggest the organization is cautious about rushing Martin into action, instead opting to allow him to learn from the sidelines this season. The report emphasizes that the absence of Warner has impacted the entire defense, as he is recognized for his elite intelligence, communication skills, and ability to cover crucial areas of the field.

Shanahan noted, "You’re missing a Hall-of-Fame player. Fred is elite when it comes to just how intelligent he is, how he communicates, how he can get us in and out of every single thing." The lack of Warner has not only affected coverage but also allowed offenses to exploit weaknesses in the secondary.

The report indicates that the 49ers' defensive strategy is in a state of flux without Warner's presence, leaving them vulnerable to opposing offenses, particularly those utilizing tight ends heavily. Shanahan concluded that while Gifford has been brought in for his run defense and special teams capabilities, the team's decision to hold Martin back reflects their long-term strategy for player development and team performance.
