Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is currently on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery for torn ACL and LCL injuries. The surgery, performed by Dr. Dan Cooper in Dallas, was successful with no artery, nerve, joint surface, or meniscal damage reported.
According to Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs' vice president of sports medicine and performance, the expected timeline for Mahomes' recovery is around nine months, although it could vary by a month or two depending on his rehabilitation progress.
Mahomes has begun his rehab process, initially in Dallas, and is expected to continue it in Kansas City under the guidance of assistant athletic trainer Julie Frymyer. Burkholder emphasized that Mahomes' structured approach to his recovery and his dedication could lead to a faster return than normal, stating, "He’s so regimented in what he does, he’s in here at 6 a.m., he’s the last guy out at night." Head coach Andy Reid also expressed optimism, noting that Mahomes' positive attitude plays a significant role in recovery.
The Chiefs are preparing for the 2026 season without their star quarterback, as Mahomes aims for a return by Week 1, which is slated for September 10, 2026. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew will lead the team for the remainder of the season following their playoff elimination after a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
This injury marks a significant moment for the Chiefs, ending their decade-long playoff streak.
