Ohio University Fires Football Coach Brian Smith for Misconduct

Ohio University has fired football coach Brian Smith for cause, citing serious professional misconduct. The decision, announced after Smith was placed on leave earlier this month, includes allegations of 'extramarital affairs'—one reportedly involving a graduate student—and the consumption of alcohol while on the job.

University president Lori Stewart Gonzalez stated that Smith's actions brought 'disrepute, scandal and ridicule' to the institution, mentioning instances where he appeared intoxicated at public events.

Defensive coordinator John Hauser has been appointed as the interim coach for the upcoming bowl game against UNLV on December 23. Smith, who became the head coach after serving as interim last season, disputes the university's reasoning for his dismissal and plans to contest it, asserting that he is an ethical man who has served the university well.

According to CBS Sports, the university did not initially provide details for Smith's leave but later specified the misconduct that led to his termination.
