In the wake of the Dolphins' 28-15 loss to the Steelers, head coach Mike McDaniel faced intense scrutiny regarding his game strategy and decision-making. McDaniel expressed his disappointment, stating, "I'm supremely disappointed we couldn't come out with a win," as the Dolphins officially missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
He acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly in the passing game, which he said hasn't been good enough, adding, "Everybody has to do better. I have to coach better." McDaniel pointed out that the team's inability to get first downs severely limited their running game, which had been effective in previous weeks.
He noted, "It's tough when you're not getting first downs to keep that rhythm and work the line of scrimmage like we wanted to." Criticisms of the Dolphins' fourth-quarter performance were highlighted by ESPN's Troy Aikman, who questioned why Miami did not play at a faster tempo while trailing.
McDaniel's comments reflected an urgent need for adjustments, especially as the Dolphins continue to struggle with critical situations coming out of halftime. Despite the disappointing outcome, McDaniel remained hopeful, stating, "My expectation is we are going to bounce back no matter how much [this loss] hurts," while also alluding to the physical dominance displayed by the Steelers throughout the game.
The Dolphins' season now hangs in the balance as they head into the final stretch, with many questioning the future direction of the team under McDaniel and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
