The Miami Dolphins have officially re-signed offensive lineman Kion Smith to their practice squad on Tuesday, according to The Phinsider. This move comes after the team had to make room for the return of tight end Darren Waller and right tackle Austin Jackson late last week.
Smith, a 27-year-old lineman, was initially cut alongside tight end Hayden Rucci, who was subsequently claimed by the Detroit Lions. However, Smith cleared waivers and remains with the Dolphins. He first signed with Miami in September of 2021 after being undrafted and failing to make the Atlanta Falcons' 53-man roster.
Smith spent his rookie season on the Dolphins' practice squad and saw his first regular season action this year, participating in nine games while logging 70 offensive snaps and 45 special teams snaps.
In the current season, Smith has played in 11 games, starting two at the right guard position. To accommodate Smith's return to the practice squad, the Dolphins released offensive lineman Braeden Daniels.
Daniels was a fourth-round selection by the Washington Commanders in the 2023 NFL Draft but did not see any regular season action in his single season with the Dolphins. The decision to re-sign Smith highlights Miami's focus on maintaining depth and stability along their offensive line as they navigate the rest of the season.
With injuries and roster changes becoming frequent, Smith's experience could prove valuable as the Dolphins continue their campaign in the NFL.
