Jaguars rookie receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter will miss the remainder of the season following surgery on his right knee to repair his lateral collateral ligament, according to ESPN. The injury occurred during a non-contact drill in practice on October 30.

Initially, the team expected Hunter to miss about four games, but further testing revealed the need for surgery, which confirmed that his ACL was intact. Hunter underwent the operation in Dallas and is projected to return to football activities in approximately six months.

Until his injury, Hunter had been making significant strides, registering 28 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown, primarily as a receiver. His last game was marked by a standout performance, where he caught eight passes for 104 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in London.

This performance had positioned him as a rising star, especially as he began to take on a larger role in the offense amid struggles from fellow receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who has struggled with drops this season.

Hunter's versatility was evident, playing 67% of the team's offensive snaps while also contributing on defense, with 15 tackles and three pass breakups in the first part of the season. Following Hunter's injury, the Jaguars have had to reassess their receiving corps.

With Hunter sidelined, the team acquired receiver Jakobi Meyers from the Las Vegas Raiders just before the trade deadline. Meyers made his debut with the Jaguars in their recent loss to the Houston Texans, catching three passes for 41 yards.

The injury raises concerns about the team's depth at receiver, particularly with Thomas also dealing with an ankle injury that could keep him out for several games. Parker Washington has stepped up in Hunter's absence, becoming a go-to target for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, with 28 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns over the past three games.

The Jaguars had high hopes for Hunter, who was selected second overall in the draft, having traded significant assets, including a first-round pick in 2026, to move up for him. His dual-threat potential as both a receiver and cornerback was seen as a game-changer.

However, the team's approach to utilizing Hunter on both sides of the ball has faced scrutiny, as he initially struggled to find his footing in the NFL. Critics suggest that the Jaguars should focus on maximizing his impact on one side of the ball before expanding his role.

Despite the setbacks, the Jaguars remain optimistic that with proper rehabilitation, Hunter can return stronger next season, and his early-season struggles may not define his future with the team. As the Jaguars prepare for their next game against the Los Angeles Chargers, they will need to adjust their offensive strategies to compensate for the loss of Hunter, who was beginning to emerge as a key player in their scheme.
