Fox Sports Drops Mark Sanchez Amid Legal Issues
Full Transcript
Fox Sports has permanently severed ties with Mark Sanchez amid serious legal issues he is currently facing. This decision follows Sanchez's involvement in a violent altercation in Indianapolis, where he was stabbed and subsequently arrested following a fight with a 69-year-old truck driver.
Multiple outlets have reported this, and a Fox spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic that Sanchez is no longer with the network. The report states that Sanchez has been charged with felony battery, along with at least three misdemeanors, which could result in a prison sentence of one to six years if he is convicted.
Sanchez, age 38, had been slated to call the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders on October 5, but was hospitalized following the incident and replaced by Brady Quinn for that matchup.
In a significant move, Fox Sports has hired Drew Brees, another former NFL quarterback, to take over Sanchez's analyst role. Brees is expected to partner with play-by-play voice Adam Amin and has been signed to call games through at least the 2026 season.
Brees, at 46 years old, retired after the 2020 season and previously worked with NBC Sports, contributing to their Notre Dame broadcasts and appearing on Football Night in America. He has also done studio work for Fox and ESPN and served as an analyst for Netflix's international game last Christmas.
Notably, Brees led the New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV championship in the 2009 season and ranks second in NFL history for passing yards and touchdown passes behind only Tom Brady. This development raises important questions regarding the future of sports analysts who find themselves embroiled in personal controversies, particularly in light of Sanchez's departure.
Sources indicate that Fox Sports will not be making any additional comments on the matter at this time.
