Lions Trade Deadline Approaches: Potential Moves Discussed
Full Transcript
With the NFL trade deadline looming at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions are actively exploring options to bolster their offensive line, particularly after the recent loss of starting left guard Christian Mahogany to a long-term injury.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged during a radio appearance that they've been considering potential trades to upgrade their roster. He emphasized that while the team has depth options like Kayode Awosika and Trystan Colon, finding a suitable offensive lineman will be challenging, as such players are in high demand.
Campbell noted, 'It's hard to get rid of them if you're the other team. If you are, you're going to ask an astronomical amount.' Despite these challenges, Campbell remains optimistic about the recovery of tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, who both faced injury concerns in their recent game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Meanwhile, the financial landscape for the Lions is also a factor in their decision-making, as they currently have about $20.9 million in cap space, which is the fifth most in the NFL. However, they are projected to be over the cap in 2026, prompting the team to consider the long-term implications of any trade.
In terms of potential trade targets, the Lions are focusing on the guard position due to Mahogany's injury. Among the options discussed is Cleveland's Joel Bitonio, a seven-time Pro Bowler, who would be a perfect fit but could come at a high cost due to the Browns' intent to remain competitive.
Another possibility is Kevin Zeitler from the Titans, who has familiarity with the Lions' system but would necessitate further shuffling of the offensive line. Additionally, the Lions could look at tackle Kelvin Beachum from Arizona, who, despite being a backup, brings valuable experience and could provide depth at a low cost.
Ultimately, the Lions are weighing their options carefully as they aim to strengthen their offensive line and enhance their playoff prospects, reflecting their aspirations for a successful season.
