Lions Offensive Line Adjustments Ahead of Commanders Game
Full Transcript
The Detroit Lions are making significant adjustments to their offensive line ahead of their matchup against the Washington Commanders. This comes after the team placed starting left guard Christian Mahogany on injured reserve.
According to the Grand Rapids Press, Mahogany is not expected to return until late December, prompting the Lions to consider various options for the left guard position. As a result, Kayode Awosika is anticipated to step in as the starter.
Awosika has previously started seven regular-season games and even played in the playoffs this year. Lions head coach Dan Campbell has expressed confidence in Awosika, noting that he has played alongside him in crucial situations without concern.
Despite shoulder injuries impacting both Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell, they are expected to start at left tackle and right tackle, respectively. This comes after a challenging performance in pass protection, as quarterback Jared Goff has been sacked 18 times this season, with 14 occurring in the last four games alone.
The offensive line's struggles have been a focal point of concern, especially after a difficult outing against the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions are also dealing with injuries in their running back corps, with Craig Reynolds listed as questionable and Jacob Saylors out due to a back injury.
Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery remain the primary options in the backfield, with other players filling in primarily for special teams roles. On the receiving end, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Kalif Raymond lead the pack, while rookie Isaac TeSlaa is expected to see increased opportunities as the coaching staff seeks to manage the snap counts of their top receivers.
The tight end position remains strong with Sam LaPorta making significant contributions recently, including scoring touchdowns in his last two games. The Lions' defensive line stays relatively consistent, with Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill as key starters, while the secondary is adjusting due to the absence of safety Kerby Joseph, who will miss his third consecutive game.
Thomas Harper is set to start again at safety, with the team also looking to incorporate Avonte Maddox's versatility in the secondary. Special teams will feature Sione Vaki and Craig Reynolds as potential returners, indicating continued adjustments as the team prepares for their critical Week 10 matchup against the Commanders.
