Lions Defensive Changes: Veteran Lineman Placed on IR
Full Transcript
The Detroit Lions have placed veteran defensive lineman Pat O'Connor on injured reserve. This decision follows O'Connor's absence from last week's game against the Washington Commanders due to a knee injury.
Despite showing some signs of progress with participation in practice earlier this week, O'Connor missed both Thursday and Friday's sessions, indicating a potential setback in his recovery. His role within the Lions' defense had been diminishing in recent weeks, with O'Connor averaging just 7.5 defensive snaps over his last four games.
However, he was valued for his versatility, being able to play both interior and edge positions on the defensive line. In O'Connor's absence, the Lions have shifted their focus to rely more on players like Tyler Lacy on the edge and a mix of Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams, Roy Lopez, and DJ Reader on the interior.
O'Connor has also been a consistent presence on special teams, logging at least 15 special teams snaps in seven games this season. He has received recognition from the coaching staff for his contributions in that area.
With O'Connor now on IR, he is required to miss at least the next four games, making him eligible to return in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Rams. The Lions are expected to manage this loss effectively, especially with Josh Paschal nearing a return from his own injured reserve stint.
This adjustment in the defensive lineup will be critical for the Lions as they prepare for their upcoming matchups and aim to maintain their competitive edge in the season.
