Detroit Lions' Offensive Line Adjustments Amidst Roster Changes
Full Transcript
The Detroit Lions have made a strategic move on their offensive line by signing rookie offensive lineman Jack Conley to their practice squad. According to his agency, Conley went undrafted this year and initially signed with the New England Patriots, where he spent the first month of the season on the practice squad before being released on September 30.
Conley was a standout at Boston College, where he was a teammate of injured Lions guard Christian Mahogany. He started for three seasons and displayed versatility across the offensive line. In 2022, he played primarily at tackle, starting all 12 games, and in the following year, he showcased his skills at right tackle, left guard, and even tight end.
Last season, he solidified his position by starting all 12 games at right guard. Standing at six feet seven inches and weighing 325 pounds, Conley possesses the physical attributes necessary for both tackle and guard positions.
His performance during the preseason was promising; he logged 76 snaps at right tackle and earned a collective PFF grade of 68.3, allowing just one pressure in 28 pass-blocking snaps. In training camp, he also demonstrated capability as a guard and as a sixth offensive lineman, which could provide depth for the Lions.
However, with Mahogany expected to be sidelined for at least a month due to injury, Conley is not anticipated to immediately challenge for a spot on the 53-man roster or the starting left guard position.
His signing reflects the Lions' efforts to bolster their offensive line amidst the challenges they face and indicates a long-term developmental strategy for the team. This addition could be crucial as the season progresses and the Lions navigate player injuries and roster adjustments.
According to Pride of Detroit, the Lions are making calculated moves to strengthen their offensive line and overall team depth, ensuring they are prepared for the challenges ahead.
