The Detroit Lions have activated linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez from the physically unable to perform list to their active 53-man roster, as reported by Pride of Detroit. This activation comes after Rodriguez's long recovery from a torn ACL suffered during last year's Thanksgiving game against the Buffalo Bills.

Initially expected to return sooner, Rodriguez faced a setback that required an additional procedure, but he has been practicing for the last three weeks. With the conclusion of his 21-day evaluation period, the Lions had to make a decision to either put him on the roster or place him on season-ending reserve.

Fortunately for the team, they had an open spot available after placing tight end Sam LaPorta on injured reserve, allowing them to activate Rodriguez without making a corresponding move. His return is particularly timely as the Lions prepare for their upcoming game against the New York Giants.

Rodriguez not only adds depth to the linebacker position, which is currently well-staffed with starters Jack Campbell, Alex Anzalone, and Derrick Barnes performing at high levels, but he also enhances the special teams unit.

Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp highlighted Rodriguez's previous contributions, stating that having a good player back helps reduce the load on the rest of the team. He emphasized that the addition of Rodriguez would be beneficial in sharing responsibilities across the squad.

In addition to Rodriguez’s activation, Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism regarding cornerback D.J. Reed's potential return from injured reserve this week. Campbell noted that Reed looks positive and is expected to participate in practice, indicating that the team could see further reinforcements on the defensive side soon.

The activation of Rodriguez represents a significant boost for the Detroit Lions as they look to improve their defensive capabilities as the season progresses.
