Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed the team’s challenges following the tragic death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland during a press conference at The Star in Frisco. Schottenheimer spoke with a heavy heart, reflecting on the emotional impact of Kneeland’s passing, which was a result of suicide. He emphasized the need for the team to support one another during this difficult time, stating, "We don’t move on, but we do move forward." Schottenheimer described Kneeland as having "the most playful spirit of any young man I've been around" and highlighted his infectious smile and unmatched work ethic on the field.
In light of the tragedy, the NFL provided counseling and grief resources to the Cowboys. The team held a virtual meeting shortly after the news broke, allowing players and coaches to express their grief while many were away during the bye week. Upon returning, the Cowboys organized team meetings and breakout sessions to further process their collective loss. A candlelight vigil was held at the Ford Center, attended by players, coaches, and Kneeland's girlfriend, Catalina Mancera. Schottenheimer noted the vigil was "beautifully done" and included heartfelt speeches from team owner Jerry Jones, Kneeland's agent, and fellow teammates, which helped foster a sense of community and healing.
Schottenheimer acknowledged the varying ways teammates were coping, mentioning that players like quarterback Dak Prescott and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas, both of whom have experienced similar losses, were stepping up as leaders. He shared his personal struggle with grief as he had tears in his eyes while addressing the media. "If the head coach is hurting, someone’s got to pick me up. And I’m hurting. And these guys have picked me up, and I’ve picked them up," Schottenheimer said, emphasizing the familial bond within the team.
The Cowboys have established the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund to provide for Mancera and the couple's unborn child, with Schottenheimer stating, "We want to make sure she’s taken care of, and the baby’s taken care of for the rest of their lives." As the team prepares for their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Schottenheimer reassured that the players would honor Kneeland’s memory and carry his spirit onto the field. The head coach asserted, "Some guys, getting out on the grass is going to be the best thing in the world for them. Some guys, getting out on the grass is going to be painful and that’s okay. We’re going to give each other grace and time." This difficult period is a testament to the strength of the Cowboys' culture and camaraderie as they navigate this tragedy together.
