Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is currently facing significant health challenges as he awaits a liver transplant. According to Fox News, Kosar revealed on social media that he recently underwent two aggressive procedures to address internal bleeding, with a third procedure anticipated.
The liver transplant he was scheduled to receive was delayed due to complications from an infected donor organ. In a heartfelt video shared on his X account, Kosar expressed gratitude for the support he has received, stating, 'Grateful for all the thoughts and prayers.
I am in the hospital getting some care and keeping that fighter's spirit strong.' He emphasized the importance of community support, particularly in light of Veterans Day, highlighting his ongoing efforts to assist veterans and first responders through his Kosar Wellness foundation.
Kosar, now 61, has been open about his health struggles, having been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's disease in July 2024. This diagnosis placed him on the liver transplant list, where he has been awaiting a suitable donor.
In a prior interview with Cleveland Magazine, Kosar indicated that despite his diagnosis, he has shown signs of improvement. His most recent surgery was deemed successful, and he remains hopeful for a liver transplant soon.
Former teammates, including running back Earnest Byner, have shared messages of support, encouraging Kosar to keep fighting. Byner stated, 'BK, my prayers are with you. I always respected and loved you.' Kosar's legacy in Cleveland is substantial; he played for the Browns for nine seasons and remains one of the franchise's all-time leaders in passing yards, touchdowns, and games played by a quarterback.
He led the team to four playoff appearances and three AFC Championship berths during his tenure. His resilience continues to inspire not only Browns fans but also the wider community as he navigates these health challenges while advocating for others in difficult situations.
