Baker Mayfield's Injury Update: Bucs Face Tough Road Ahead
Full Transcript
Baker Mayfield has been diagnosed with a low-grade sprain of the AC joint in his left shoulder, following an MRI that confirmed the injury sustained during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' recent game against the Los Angeles Rams.
The injury occurred in the second quarter, particularly after Mayfield had a 7-yard scramble, and he showed visible discomfort as he left the field for the medical tent. Despite his injury, he returned to complete the first half but appeared to aggravate the injury while attempting a Hail Mary pass on the final play before halftime, which led to an interception.
Coach Todd Bowles noted that Mayfield initially insisted he was fine but did end up exacerbating the injury before leaving the game. The Buccaneers ultimately lost the game 34 to 7, marking their third consecutive defeat, and leaving them tied with the Carolina Panthers for the NFC South lead at 6-5.
Mayfield's performance prior to his exit included 41 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater stepped in for Mayfield after his departure, and it remains uncertain whether Mayfield will be able to play in the upcoming Week 13 home game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Reports suggest that while Mayfield's injury is classified as low-grade, his status for the next game is unclear, indicating the Bucs may face significant challenges ahead if he cannot participate. This situation adds to the Bucs' struggles as they look to break their losing streak and keep pace in a tightly contested NFC South division.
The team has relied on Mayfield for a solid performance this season, as he has thrown for 2,406 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions across 11 games. The potential absence of their starting quarterback could significantly impact the Buccaneers, who are already dealing with adversity as they seek to turn their season around.
